I remember when
we used to pretend that
a little red wagon was a race car
and being heroes
and no one ever wanted to be the monster
I remember when
the dark was fear
and nightmares, infectious
when movies were scary,
and boogey men lived under our beds
I remember when
everything was awe-inspiring
and we were always curious
when everything was a discovery and a mess
and cooties and the tooth-fairy were real
I remember when
we were full of innocence,
But it slowly melted
into the sludge of society.
